Spray painting old vases to give them new life

For some reason, there are a few objects I can't get enough of. I seem to buy them allllll of the time. Vases are one of those things that I just seem to love. Over the years I have collected a few of them. Each time I have an event, I find myself wandering the Dollar Store aisle looking at them wondering what I can make wit them.  

Vase Uses

They are great for Christmas decorations. I love to put ornaments inside of them. It is an easy way to bring a little holiday cheer to any corner of a home.  This past Teacher's Appreciation week I gave floral arrangements to my kids' teachers. Of course, I got their vases from the dollar store. 

They are also great to hold candy and party snacks. You can fill the bottom of jars with something decorative to add your theme. Hot glue and a few print outs of thematic items bring life to a party table. They can also be used for candles and well, flowers (who knew vases can actually hold flowers). 

FOr the love of Rose gold

The one draw back is, it can be expensive to find vases in colors you like, or you may not be able to find the exact color you are looking for.  Right now, gold is popular.  However, I love rose gold. It has become an accent in my home during the holiday season.  When I designed my daughter's room, I used rose gold.  It was the perfect accent for a little girl.  Since our kitchen renovation, I want it to be a staple color. Something we would see throughout the home daily.   

I've been looking for rose gold decorations, but they are far and few between. Spray painting existing vases leftover from previous projects was the perfect idea. I was able to get rid of items I already had and create something I can use. It also allowed me to try out a technique I'd seen on Pinterest; tape and spray paint designs.  

Painting Vases

After going into one of my favorite stores, Home Depot for paint, I was ready. The top was cracked on the can, so they had it marked down 50% off! SCORE! Stealing, I mean borrowing, my husband's roll of blue tape I got to work. 

I placed the tape on the vases in random patterns. The trick is to keep the tape smooth so you get straight lines. I didn't want a heavily covered vase, so I lightly covered it. It gave a slight ombre effect.  They are translucent in many areas, then the color tapers off towards the top.  On my smaller square vases, I opted not to tape those. Instead, I did a diagonal ombre pattern. 

The reason I went for ombre and translucent over fully covering-- I want these to be more flexible for design later. These can be used for flowers or candles. If I put candles inside, you will be able to see the flame  from inside the holder. During Christmas, I can still fill them with ornaments for my table setting. ​

I would spray paint vases all over again

The effect they have is perfect for the foyer. During the fall, I'll probably put them on my dining room table. I'm excited for the new craft I learned this weekend. This is an effect I will be utilizing again in the near future.
